Challenge

To design a strategy-based multiplayer game that eliminates elements of luck and focuses purely on strategic decision-making. The game mechanics were expected to incorporate strategy mechanics like deduction, trading, and resource management. Additionally, the game needed to be immersive, visually engaging, and based on a cohesive theme to enhance the player experience.

Ideation and Process

Our initial focus was on resource management combined with deduction and trading mechanics. We explored how players could use available resources and create combinations to gain points, while maintaining control over their decisions.

Early ideas revolved around dynamic marketplaces where players traded for profit, and resource combinations that influenced outcomes. From there, we experimented with various board designs and player interactions to encourage strategic thinking without introducing randomness.

Final Iteration

In the final iteration, we moved away from using a physical board as the central element and instead focused on resource exchange, deduction, and marketplace dynamics. The result was, a strategy-based game where players trade resources, manage market prices, and complete resource-goals.

Final concepts and Design

Final Game Concept:

Players compete in a dynamic trading and deduction game where each begins with eight random resources and three hidden target cards. The central market’s fluctuating prices shift with every transaction, keeping gameplay unpredictable. On their turn, players can either trade resources or place a bet on another player’s hidden targets, but not both. Successful bets let them claim opponents’ cards, blending market strategy with deduction in a constantly evolving economy.

Final Theme – Alchemy:

To enhance immersion, we themed the game around alchemy, transforming ordinary elements into precious metals. Players must gather and combine resources like lead, iron, and other elements to create copper, silver, and ultimately gold. Completing target combinations symbolizes the discovery of gold through alchemical mastery.

Production process and journey

Key takeaways

This project stood out as a distinct and exploratory exercise, involving rapid prototyping, iterative testing, and hands-on production of all the physical game elements. It offered valuable insights into how strategy-based mechanics are developed and the challenges of minimizing luck to create a balanced, skill-driven experience. The process also highlighted the importance of refining interactions between design, testing, and gameplay to achieve coherence and engagement.

If revisited, the focus would be on streamlining the mechanics and reducing the overall game time to ensure smoother play and a more strategically satisfying experience.
